The rear differential of my 300E, equipped with a 3L M103 engine, had a failure. And with a low mileage of just 300,000 kilometers. The engine did not technically fail, but it produced a loud buzzing noise that intensified even after I replaced the oil. It was substituted with in front of me, so no further actions were taken without my knowledge. The vehicle has been running well since it has accumulated 380,000 kilometers, and the oil has been consistently replaced at a maximum interval of 80,000 kilometers.
As far as I know, if there is a loud humming noise that occurs during acceleration, regardless of the speed, it is likely due to a problem with the rear differential. In all likelihood, the rear differential will need to be replaced.
The value is 3.06 ASD. I assume that from 1987, the norm for this vehicle was to replace the 3.27 non ASD with a different one. I suppose this change remained in effect until 1992 on the 2.6L 300E. Uncertain about whether it is ASD or not. I have deactivated the ASD system, leaving it in a passive state.
A greater numerical value for the ratio corresponds to a smaller gap between gears, resulting in increased acceleration but reduced top speed (along by higher RPM) assuming both the gearbox and engine has sufficient power to achieve the limit. Additionally, it has worse fuel efficiency.
Wishing you well in resolving the issue. The incessant buzzing drove me to madness in the past.
